ROCK YOU 1984
This was the song and video that catapulted Helix to international stardom. The song was written by Bob Halligan (Some Heads are Gonna Roll/Take These Chains) in N.Y.C. but the verse lyrics were written by myself, although I received no writing credit on the song. When I pressed my manager William Seip about this (I didn’t want money, just credit on the lyrics) Bob’s manager at the time (Barry Bergman) replied, “Teh song is a hit…if you wanna push for this we’ll just give the song to someone else…” So that’s what we did…
The video was shot at the old Toronto Brick yards, just off the Don Valley Expressway in Toronto. The filming took two days. It was the spring of the year and freezing cold. On the second day producer Rob Quarterly was going to wrap up shooting around 2A.M. We protested vigorously, as we felt that “the money shot” (which was Brent coming out of the water playing guitar like some evolutionary missing link-lol) had not been filmed. After a short argument between Brent, our manager William Seip and producer Rob Quarterly we agreed to do the shot-once. Brent had to get underneath the water, and, on cue come out playing guitar. By the time he was done, he was blue from the cold…but we got the shot. We slept overnight in our cars, had a cold shower inside the brick yard the next morning, and then went to see our lawyer Ed Glinard. (I think his name was). As soon as that was done we had to drive back to Kitchener for a photo session with all of us in Octoberfest gear-leiderhosin, funny hats, -the whole bit.
The video was a huge hit, going to heavy rotation in many territories around the world. Fans from Brazil told me that it was on constantly all day long. In Sweden it would set the ground work for a Number One album the next year with LONG WAY TO HEAVEN. In Canada the song/video took us almost to double platinum status; in the States it was a huge hit as well, landing us on the Whitesnake/Quiot Riot tour right across the U.S.
