April/May 2017 Recording GET YER HANDS DIRTY
This CD came about quite unexpectedly…I wasn’t looking to do a solo CD and then suddenly I was doing one. Here’s the story:
On the past couple of Helix CDs I’ve been working with Sean Kelly: Vagabond Bones, Smash Hits Unplugged, and finally Bastard of the Blues. Sean and I hit it off immediately as writers and over the years we’ve tossed around the idea of recording a Canadian cover CD. Eventually that idea evolved into recording a R&B album, but we did little to follow up our wishes. Then, one day in late 2016 that all changed…I was talking to Sean on the phone one day from my winter home in Fort Myers, Florida and he was working with Gavin Brown, one of Canada’s top producers. I knew Gavi too, having been introduced to him by Sean when I participated in the CBC show “Cover Me Canada”. Gavin was the overseer of the music on that show. I jokingly asked Sean if Gavin would ever work with me and he replied, “Well, why don’t you ask him?” So… I asked Gavin and to my surprise he said, “Sure! When do you want to do it?” Well, I hadn’t even considered what would happen if he said “yes” so now I was in a real pickle. Where was I going to come up with the money? Well, just like the song says! With a little help from my friends.
The following film clips are from one of the greatest experiences of my life. It’s about 20 minutes (a little long) but it gives you a real gist of what those 4 wonderful days were like-6 if you count pre-production! LOL. Thanks to everyone involved, especially Gavin and Sean for believing in me.
