1990: Fritz in Europe: I’m tired but I can’t sleep
I love this clip because it’s Fritz talking about all he’s gone through to try and get sleep on the road and basically…failed. LOL. Paul is filming and commenting in the background. It’s a little inside look at what we went through on some of those tours…It wasn’t all glory.
This clip is dark but I love it because it’s so genuine. You can feel how tired Fritz is but listening to him talk. I called the clip “You Go To Sleep Now” because that is the question that sets this whole piece of film up. It’s being asked by Paul Hackman himself, as he was doing the filming and background commentary. The camera had been left to us to film ourselves by the Much Music (Mike & Mike) guys who had come over to film the Helix special “Waltzing in Vienna”. Their gear got lost on the way over and they were only really able to film one show, so they basically filmed us walking around Vienna sight-seeing, drinking beer, and playing our one gig where they were actually going to be there.
We had been travelling all across Europe in a rented British van with our gear in the back with plywood on top, which we would ride on top of like sardines in a can. That’s the van that Paul and Fritz are referring to. I can’t remember which country the ferry was coming from, but it was at the end of the Ian Gillan tour and right before our gig at The Marquee in London, England. Lynda came to that gig.
You can read about it in my autobiography “Gimme an R!” available at Planet Helix. This clip was during the touring of the Back For Another Taste album, also available at the merch section of this website. All CDS/books signed by Brian Vollmer.
