1979 Helix in Trenton, Ontario
I remember this picture being taken like it was yesterday. It was in front of the Helix truck outside the Sherwood Forest Inn in Trenton, Ontario. From left to right are: Kenny Heague (our soundman, who would later become our road manager. After he left Helix he went to work for Green Jelly/LIVE/Bette Midler/Melissa Etheridge/Indigo Girls and eventually became the personal assistant to Jim Irsey, owner of the Indianapolis Colts), Brian Doerner (who would later go on to drum for Refugee & Saga), Paul Hackman (Helix guitarist/songwriter who would die in an early 90’s car accident coming back from a western Canadian tour), myself, Keith Zurbrigg/bass, and Brent Doerner/Helix guitar player from 1976-1989/2008-2013 (Brian & Brent are identical twin brothers. Brent is now retired from Helix but still films/edits our videos).
The Sherwood Forest or “Quinty Hotel” as it was known, burnt down around 2015. It was a pretty scary place with most of the upstairs rooms filled with chronic alcoholics. The owner was Al Steinberg, who died of a heart attack on the front steps. Legend has it that it was on the day he sold the place. Read all about it in my autobiography “Gimme an R!”, available at the merch section of Planet Helix.
