Friday, January 18th Benefit for Fritz w/SYRE & THE KILLER DWARFS
As many Helix fans already know, Fritz sustained major injuries when he fell from a ladder while putting shingles on his roof. This happened the Monday before our show at Maxwell’s in November, the day after a fantastic practice. He suffered a brain injury, fractured skull, 3 broken rigs, a broken back in two places, and fractured vertebrae. Many fans & friends jumped into action offering their services for a benefit, donated to his Go Fund Me campaign, and gave items for auction.
Lynda and I were just getting ready to leave for Florida for 4 months, so I had barely a week to organize a benefit at The Eastsides in London, just down the street from Planet Helix. There were at least 10 bands offering their services to play for free that night, but in the end I had to pick two-SYRE & THE KILLER DWARFS. The event sold out in a mere 3 days with fans clamoring for tickets. Friends from as far away as Brandon, Manitoba & Grand Falls, Newfoundland booked their airline tickets for the show. Amazing. Many of our peers in the music industry contacted me with donations: The Trailer Park Boys, Coney Hatch, Lee Aaron, & Prism-just to mention a few. As well, former Helix drummer Archie Gamble auctioned off his Helix gold album, garnering $700 from a willing buyer. Fantastic!
Money raised from this gig, the auction that night, and Fritz’s Go Fund Me campaign will help take off the stress in the upcoming months as Fritz goes through a long road to recovery. Thankyou to each and every one of you for your generosity.
